Madeira Airport (FNC) sits about 20 minutes east of Funchal on the VR1 expressway, so many people collect there and drive straight in. If you'd rather not deal with a car on your first evening, plenty of operators deliver to hotels and apartments across Funchal and the south coast — you start driving when you're ready, not the moment you land.

Funchal is built on a slope, so expect steep streets, tight one-way sections in the old town, and busy roundabouts on the ring roads. It's nothing dramatic once you've done it once, but a smaller car and an automatic make the hills and hairpins easier if you're not used to them.

Leaving the city is quick: the VR1 expressway runs along the south coast and feeds the tunnels that reach the north and west, all toll-free. Cabo Girão and Câmara de Lobos are a short hop west; Pico do Arieiro and the mountains climb away to the north.

On-street parking in the centre is mostly paid 'Zona Azul' (blue zone) by day — buy and display a ticket. For anything longer than a quick stop, the car parks around the marina, the Lavradores market and the old town are simpler: you pay by the hour and don't have to feed a meter.

Many hotels offer parking, though space can be tight and sometimes carries a nightly charge — worth checking when you book your stay if you're keeping the car outside your door.

Funchal makes an ideal base because so much is within an hour's drive. West along the coast: Câmara de Lobos, the Cabo Girão skywalk, and on to the terraced slopes of the southwest. North through the tunnels: São Vicente, Seixal and the sea pools at Porto Moniz. Up into the cloud: Pico do Arieiro for sunrise, or the Paul da Serra plateau.

Because the island is small, you can pair two or three of these in a day and still be back for dinner in the old town — the kind of flexibility a fixed tour can't offer.
